He must remain in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail. Is this because the 30-year-old Mr Iqbal has a criminal record, and would run riot if he were allowed out? Hardly. He is a cripple, said by the jail's medical officer in his court report to be suffering from paraparesis"-partial paralysis of the legs-"with loss of sensation of the left side and no control over micturition or defecation."

On the one hand, many leaders would like to promote a more peaceful idea of Islam - they need to do this because the presence of extremists also means the presence of terrorists, and they can't be seen as protecting Muslim terrorists. On the other hand, most seem to depend upon the extremists in order to maintain their power - if they try to push the extremists aside, they could find themselves as the ones pushed aside. What can they do?
